5 Ways To Be More Intentional In Life

I had the opportunity to visit the Perot Museum with my family, and what a rewarding adventure it was! We learned, we played, and we laughed. Reflecting on the experience, here are 5 ways we can be more intentional – living life, rather than letting it happen to us.

1. Find Your Inner Mammoth

We were first introduced to Ellie May, a Colombian mammoth who was uncovered in our own home state of Texas. Interestingly, it was an accidental discovery at a sand pit in Ellis county (in the month of May, hence the name Ellie May).

Just like Ellie May’s discovery, we can find unexpected treasures within ourselves when we dig deep, exploring and developing our divine nature. Somewhere inside each of us, there is a mammoth just waiting to show the world what we’re made of!

2. Focus on Similarities, Not Differences

The next big treat was the National Geographic movie, Jerusalem 3D, which gave me a completely new perspective and appreciation for the city and people of Jerusalem. Whether Islamic, Christian, or Jewish, the culture and traditions in Jerusalem are still as strong today as they were thousands of years ago, creating a deep sense of belonging in the people who call it home.

Listening to the stories from the inhabitants of this beautiful city, who were chosen to represent each of the three major religions, was a great admonition to focus on our similarities, and celebrate our differences.

3. When Times Are Dark, Look For The Light

After the movie it was time for more learning and exploring. This time, we headed to the depths of the ocean, where the eternal night is never broken by the rising of the sun.

In the Creatures of Light exhibit we discovered the fantastic world of bio-luminescence. Just like these beautiful creatures shining their light in the darkness, we can be a ray of light and hope for others. Conversely, we can find our own beacons in the love of our friends and family during trying times.

4. Take Time To Play

There is truly something for people of all ages and interests at the Perot Museum; even our little Pigeon had an enormous area designed to nurture her concentrated 2 year old energy and interactive learning powers. There were plenty of opportunities for her to develop her muscles and coordination, as well as her mind. She had a blast dressing up like a raccoon, an ant, and an eagle, but maybe even more selling produce in the marketplace. She is definitely going to be a life long entrepreneur like her mommy

Running your own business is a full time job and then some. Taking a lesson from a 2 year old – make sure to schedule “play time” to recharge and reconnect. Dressing up like forest animals may not be your thing (or maybe it is – no judgment here), but find something you’re passionate about that fills your tank back up. For me, nature is the ultimate way to recharge. Maybe for you it’s attending a social events, or playing an instrument. If you don’t know what your play time looks like yet, do a little self-exploration this week and find your thing.

5. Find the Lesson and The Laughter

Our two older daughters had a blast in the sports center, where we raced Olympian athletes, a cheetah, and even a T-Rex! Okay, I had a blast too 🙂 The slow motion video lab was a hit with all three girls, from age 13 to 2.

Although our whole family is passionate about staying healthy through good nutrition and physical fitness (we love yoga!), none of us are what you would call a sports fan, so it was actually by accident when we found ourselves in the sports center.

This goes to show that you can find joy in the most unexpected places when you have the right attitude live in the moment. I’ve learned from my wife that even when we find ourselves in a less than ideal situation, there is always something we can learn – and usually something we can enjoy too!

Suck Out All The Marrow of Life

We all learned so much at the Perot museum, but more importantly, we learned together while enjoying the journey, and in this fast paced society it can be easy to lose sight of what really matters. I love this quote by Henry David Thoreau:

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms.

How can you can be more intentional and present and “suck out all the marrow of life,” as Henry David Thoreau put it?

Her Price Is Far Above Rubies

What an incredible adventure it has been since I began TaylorMade Web Presence in 2012 with the encouragement and guidance of my beautiful bride, Elayna Fernandez. As I think about all of the challenges, opportunities, and growth that have come from it, I can’t help but see that none of it was accomplished on my own. The strength of TaylorMade Web Presence is in its team, which, I am blessed to say, includes the love of my life.

On this day that has been designated to celebrate love (well, I started to write this post post on Valentine’s Day), I want to celebrate my beautiful wife for the amazing dedication and selflessness that she shows to me and our daughters.

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. - Proverbs 31:10

She has been my inspiration in life, in love, in spirituality, and in business since we met working on a project as contractors in 2011. As she will tell you, and I will readily agree, I was a bit of a fixer upper, just like Kristoff from the Disney movie, Frozen. Thankfully though, she was able to see past my flaws, past my walls I had put up to keep people out, and melt my heart with the most amazing unconditional love and kindness I have ever known.

It was through her kindness and love that I learned how important it is to have people in our lives who believe in us and aren’t afraid to push us to be more. While she has always loved me for who I am and where I was at that time, she has never settled for less than she knows is my best, and has not been afraid to set healthy boundaries.

Many times she has believed in me when I did not believe in myself, and encouraged me to take leaps of faith that I thought were outside of my abilities. I can truly say that I have never been lead wrong by her advice, and when I have followed it – even when it didn’t make sense to me or I didn’t fully understand it yet – I have always seen positive results. I admire her tremendously for this quality, which comes from a consistent relationship and constant communication with our Heavenly Father.

There are many things I could brag about with my brilliant wife, but I feel the best way to describe her is through Proverbs 31:

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.”

It is so true; there are no riches in the world that can come close to her value. Ella es mi tesoro inapreciable. There is no amount of money that could replace the love I feel in her touch, the light that her smile brings to a room, or the values that she instills in our children daily.

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil”

My wife is a savvy business woman and brilliant marketer. Her contributions to TaylorMade Web Presence and the other companies she owns and manages are without parallel, always bringing in new customers and cash flow. Not only does she increase our income, she would rather put money into savings accounts or to paying off bills than go on a shopping spree. In addition to all of this, I know that I can always trust her to come through for me, to have my back, to always speak well of me, and to give me Godly advice. If there is anyone I know I can trust without qualms, it is my eternal companion.

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.”

Even when I have deeply hurt her she does not lash out in anger or revenge. Instead, she continues to work as my partner, saves hot cocoa for me when I’m not home, and speaks only well of me to others. This is not to say she lets me walk all over her or take advantage of her. She is very clear about her boundaries, but she stands firm in them while also holding on to Christ-like attributes of patience and forgiveness.

13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.”

I have never known a more diligent and eager worker than Elayna. She owns, manages, and works in multiple companies, does the laundry of a family of 5 (including cloth diapers), homeschools 3 brilliant daughters, cooks delicious, healthy, homemade, vegan meals from scratch every day, serves in a time demanding calling in our church, travels to speak at conferences, helps women find and live their passions while balancing work and home life, blogs consistently, and still has time to keep the house clean and read with our girls, all while breast feeding and carrying our baby girl who wants to have mama’s full attention 24 hours a day. And did I mention she does it all with a smile and expressions of gratitude? I literally don’t know how she does it, but I do know that she has earned the title of “The Positive MOM” many times over.

14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.”

She really does bring food from afar, LOL! She is from the Dominican republic where avocados grow the size of watermelons and the passion fruit juice needs to be watered down because the fruits are bursting with such potent flavor. Her mom makes delicious dominican dulces and we have been the blessed recipients of some of her masterpieces. But the real beauty of the way she “bringeth her food from afar” is in the way she honors the traditions of her country and teaches our daughters to love and honor them. It is the love she puts into every homemade Dominican dish, and the ritual of eating at the table as a family. It is teaching our children to always honor God by giving thanks for the food through reverent prayer, with grateful attitudes.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.”

Before I met Elayna, I had never seen someone who could go to bed at midnight, or even 1am, then wake up at 3am totally refreshed, smiling, and hitting the ground running. Like Psalm 28:7, the joy of the Lord is her strength.

Without her diligence, dedication, and strategic genius, TaylorMade Web Presence would cease to exist.

I have learned so much about love, life, business, friendship, and family from Elayna Fernandez and I am eternally grateful for the priceless gift of her heart and love.

We take so many things for granted much too often, and I want to encourage you to join me in taking a good look at the people that make a difference in our life. Find a way each day, no matter how big or small, to let them feel your appreciation for all that they do.

Make Valentine’s Day a 365 day a year holiday, always looking at the people you are blessed with through the spirit of love. Don’t forget how imperfect you are and forgive others as you would want to be forgiven.

There will be days when it is more difficult than others to live out of love, and it is at those times that we must press harder into the love of our Heavenly Father, remembering that God is love, and He is the source that our love springs from.

What will you do today to make someone special feel loved?
